Container freight rates on major trade lanes have shown mixed signals in Q2 2026. Asia-Europe rates remain elevated while transpacific routes have stabilised.
The global container shipping market in Q2 2026 continues to present a mixed picture, with significant variation across trade lanes. This update provides an overview of current market conditions and their implications for shippers.
Freight rates on the Asia-Europe trade lane remain significantly above pre-disruption levels, driven primarily by the continued rerouting of vessels around the Cape of Good Hope due to Red Sea security concerns. The Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) for Europe routes stands at approximately 2,800 USD/TEU, compared to a pre-disruption average of around 1,200 USD/TEU.
Capacity on this trade lane remains constrained as the longer voyage distances effectively remove vessel capacity from the market. Shippers should continue to book well in advance and budget for elevated rates through at least Q3 2026.
The transpacific trade lane has seen rates stabilise following the volatility of late 2025. Current rates from Asia to the US West Coast are approximately 3,200 USD/FEU, down from a peak of over 5,000 USD/FEU in October 2025. The stabilisation reflects improved port efficiency on the US West Coast and a moderation in import demand.
Intra-Asia rates, including the key Myanmar-Singapore-China corridor, remain competitive. The normalisation of Chinese New Year disruptions and increased vessel deployment on regional routes have contributed to stable pricing.
